Great day at Apiti

Saturday 1st April 2023

The Slicks and Stones Gravel Assault is run!

Yes, “Slicks and Stones Gravel Assault” was completed by 61 riders in the beautiful little village of Apiti in North Island’s Manawatu region, which has become known as "the Gateway to the Ruahines", with many opportunities for tramping, hunting, horse trekking and of course cycling.

With two categories, the the Full Assault of 120kms (elevation 1,882m) saw 58 intrepid gravel racers face the start and 23 in the Half Assault, 60kms (elevation 1,062m). Both courses included about 80% gravel.

Participants came from all over the region (with a large contingent from Wellington) to tackle the challenging terrain. The weather was perfect, with clear skies and mild temperatures creating ideal riding conditions. Riders pushed themselves to their limits as they navigated the rugged gravel tracks and steep hills of the course, but despite the challenging conditions, everyone had a great time.

It is advisable to do some practice on gravel road prior to the event so that the riders feel comfortable on a gravel surface.

If you’re from out of town, Manawatu is among one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in New Zealand, including northern Manawatu's Kimbolton, Apiti and Rangiwahia districts. The scenery is stunning - although if you’re competing, you’ll probably be looking more at the road under you – still, it could be great motivation for getting your support crew along. Plenty of accommodation in Feilding and Palmerston North, and if you have a real need to motivate that “special” supporter, book into Makoura Lodge, a luxury Country Lodge and Rural Retreat, just a short drive away (you’ll need to book in early for this one). For those who are hardened outdoor types, there’s free camping in the Apiti Camping Ground.

Riders were very appreciative of the great meals provided at the Apiti Tavern and Eatery, after competing their challenge
